Welcome to Montenegro
The Republic of Montenegro is a stunningly beautiful country with a Mediterranean climate located in the south east of Europe between the Adriatic Sea to the south and the surrounding countries of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Albania.
The country rises from the sea level of the Adriatic in the south to the high regions of Durmitor mountain in the north. There is a good boat connection with the Italian port of Bari from the Montenegrin port of Bar and if you prefer a plane in just one hour you can easily fly to the cities of Rome or Milan.
The southern part of the country receives at least 8 months of sunny and warm weather per year with temperatures in winter not usually dropping below 15 degrees so you can expect even in February to sit on your terrace in t-shirt and have dinner. At the same time for just one hour of driving you can be in the middle of the snow capped mountains surrounded by sea.
The people of the country live a very tranquil life devoid of the common pressures and strains of western living and this fact alone makes the country an attractive choice for the many different nationalities seeking an escape and a better way of life.
Montenegro became an independent state on June 6th 2006 and since that time things have increasingly improved for the inhabitants of Montenegro. The world recognized the will of the Montenegrin people to change things for the better so with every new day their entrance to the European Union becomes an ever closer reality.
The capital city of Montenegro is Podgorica which is just 2hours from all southern towns such as Kotor, Budva, Tivat and Herceg Novi. With everyday Podgorica grows into a more beautiful and modern city.
Historical and cultural capita - Cetinie.
The most popular southernmost city is Kotor and the surrounding Kotor Bay area. Kotor Bay has a huge amount of cultural and historical monuments which are of great historical and cultural value and protected by UNESCO.
In the past four years Kotor has attracted tourists from many countries but most notably from the UK, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Germany and the United States. Many investors are now also investing heavily for sale or rental returns and the market is now dominated by English and Russians. National parks Durmitor (39.000ha); Lovcen (6.400ha); Biogradska Gora (5.400ha); Skadar Lake (40.000ha).
Montenegro is first ecological country (1991 UN).
There is something here for everyone You can ski in the morning and sun bathe by the most beautiful beaches in the region in the afternoon.
The famous 19th century romantic poet, Lord Byron said of Montenegro, At the birth of our planet, the most beautiful encounter between the land and the sea must have happened at the coast of Montenegro. When the pearls of nature were sown, handfuls of them were cast on this soil. Astronauts reported the Adriatic to be the deepest blue even seen.
Money and Banking
In 2002 Montenegro converted from Deutschmarks to Euros. An unlimited amount of currency can be brought into the country, but there are limits on how many Euros may be taken out.
Changes are afoot in the country and slowly credit cards are becoming more widely used.
However, they are only accepted in major hotels, shops, restaurants and a few travel agents, which still means a heavy reliance on carrying cash. Cash machines are available in most of the towns. Increasingly banks are prepared to advance money on credit cards, although mainly only Diners Card, Visa or MasterCard.
Atlas Mont Bank and Euromarkets will also cash Euro travelers cheques, but obtaining cash with travelers cheques in foreign currency is tricky although most banks operate a foreign currency exchange service.
It is easy to open a private account in Montenegro, but choose carefully which bank to use as many charge on withdrawals. Our recommended bank is the Opportunity Bank www.opportunitybank.cg.yu. All international transfers to Montenegro are required to do through clearing banks in order to keep control of the number of Euro within the country.
This means that international bank transfers can take anything from between 5 10 working days.
Religion
Most Montenegrins are, at least nominally, Christian, but there is also a significant Muslim minority. Main Christian denomination is Eastern Orthodox, sub-divided into Montenegrin Orthodox and Serbian Orthodox; sizeable Roman Catholic presence; also small minorities of Protestants and Jews.
Population - 670.000.
Healthcare
Taking out health insurance for your travels to Montenegro is a must. There are a growing number of private clinics in Montenegro, and many of the doctors speak English and are overseas educated. Foreigners do not have access to the domestic national health system unless working locally and making national insurance contributions.
The standard of care in medical clinics is generally of a high standard. There are many private pharmacies with a good supply of drugs, however visitors should ensure they travel with any prescribed medicines they use regularly.
How to get there?
Montenegro is serviced by two airports, Tivat and Podgorica, with Croatia Dubrovnik airport only a 16 km drive over the border. Currently direct flights to Tivat from Russia and the UK are rather limited but are available in the summer season.
We hope that you will visit Montenegro and discover all of the unspoiled beauty.
